Several nations around the world are preparing for April 2 — US President Donald Trump’s deadline for a set of “reciprocal” trade tariffs against Canada, Mexico, China and the EU. Trump has termed this day “Liberation Day” for the US.
While the US President has not yet declared any reciprocal tariffs against India, he has complained about India’s tariffs on US goods on multiple occasions. With the risk of Trump tariffs looming, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal today.
In 2024, India exported goods worth nearly $74 billion to the US, and reports estimate Trump’s tariffs could cost India up to $7 billion annually. So, India is exploring its options — it could raise taxes on US imports as a response. Another likely option could be easing the trade curbs imposed on China after the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes.
